Welcome to my Web site. I am Professor Emeritus of English. I taught literature at Bethel College, St. Paul, Minnesota, for eight years and at Wheaton College, Wheaton, Illinois, for thirty-four. Please allow me to introduce you to the various sections that are available for you to explore. These sections contain some of the chief influences that have shaped my life. I offer them in the hope that you will receive enjoyment, spiritual uplift, and perhaps something you had not expected. Growing with My Garden - This is the title of one of my books; in this section of the site, you'll find pictures of my garden and some thoughts they provoke. Christian Myth - Myths are stories that reach imaginatively towards a higher reality. In this section, you'll find coments on the topic of Christian Myth. Books - Here is a list of the books I have authored or edited, together with a listing of titles that through the years have been especially significant to me. Poetry - From the hundreds of poems I have taught and enjoyed I offer portions from three that are especially meaningful to me. George MacDonald - George MacDonald's writings have had an immense influence on my life, both as a source of enjoyment and as a source of Christian thought. In this section, you'll find an introduction to his career, taken from the picture book the photographer Larry E. Fink and I have published, GEORGE MACDONALD: IMAGES OF HIS WORLD. Reading Groups - I conduct two reading groups, one on Saturday mornings at the Marion E. Wade Center on the Wheaton College campus, a the second on Wednesday evenings at Christ Church of Oakbrook. Here are the syllabuses. They are open to anyone who enjoys reading and discussion. Lectures on Lilith - George MacDonald's crowning adult fantasy Lilith (1895) teases and cajoles a reader for an interpretation. Here, in a series of lectures, is mine. Trust in the Lord with all your heart And do not rely on your own insight. In all your ways acknowledge him, And he will make straight your paths. -- Proverbs 3:5, 6 |
